attending the public schools of
Football
Football is perhaps the most popular
sport at AHS. There are more boys who try out for football that any other
sport. Football begins each year approximately two weeks before school opens.
The boys spend two weeks of rugged training at the high school gym. It is here
that the men are separated from the boys and the varsity squad is selected.
Boys who are not eligible for the varsity may be placed on the 9th
grade or the “B” team for more experience. The regular football season extends
through November. The team practices Monday through Thursday and usually plays
on Friday nights. Following basketball season, spring football drills are held
in order to find new football material. These drills last two weeks.

A
cheerleader has the job of leading other students and fans in organized
cheering during pep rallies, football, and basketball games. Try-outs are held. The varsity cheerleaders are very active all
year (also during the summer). Therefore, it is recommended that all students
wanting to try out develop an open schedule.
