
The
AHS Honors Magnet Program is an Advanced Academic College Preparatory program
designed to develop well-rounded students in a “School-Within-a-School”
setting. Students are encouraged to be
involved in every aspect of extracurricular student life – music, athletics,
art and drama.
Eligibility Requirements:
§
Students qualify for the Honors Magnet based on the following
criteria:
§
“B” average or better in 8th grade core courses.
§
A composite score of 70% or better in
§
Recommendations from the student’s eight grade teachers, school
counselor and administration.
§
A readiness test for algebra/geometry as demonstrated on an
algebra placement exam.
§
Ability to communicate as demonstrated by an appropriate score on
a reading comprehension test.
§
Ability to demonstrate competency in writing skills in the form an
essay.
Community
Involvement:
Students
are required to complete 20 hours of volunteer service each year. This participation in the community develops
the students’ appreciation for Albany and Dougherty County and enriches their
understanding and empathy for others.
Field Trips:
All
Magnet Students will participate in a number of field trips each year. The trips will be an integral part of the
curriculum and encompass all academic areas.
Field trip experience expand student horizons and help develop cultural
awareness.
Parent Participation:
Parents and students are expected to fully support the magnet
program. Parents should offer
encouragement, guidance, and a home environment that fosters the objectives and
standards of the magnet program. Parents
should support school policies and instill in their young adult student the
importance of respecting authority and behaving properly at school.
Transportation:
Transportation is provided by school bus for those students living
beyond Albany High’s zoned boundaries.
