Special Occasions at AHS

Annual Day

Something everyone looks forward to is Annual Day. Annuals (yearbooks) are distributed during the month of May at an assembly. The dedication of the annual is made during the assembly. On this date students who purchased annuals are given the opportunity to sign each other’s annuals during an annual signing party.

Awards Night

During the spring an awards program is planned to present academic awards and some scholarships. This is an evening affair to which recipients of awards and their parents are invited. Refreshments are served following the program.

Class Day

“Class Day” is an assembly program presented by the senior class. Each member of the senior class marches into the auditorium after the underclassmen are seated. The seniors present a short program. On this date, the underclassmen move up to the next class level seating area.

Homecoming

Our homecoming is usually held in the month of October. One football game is designated as the homecoming game. The homecoming dance is held on the following night after the game. Albany High is infamous for it’s homecoming week. For each day of the week there is a new theme assigned. There is a daily contest for whose garb fit the theme most appropriately. Members of the AHS faculty judge costumes, and the top three winners receive awards.

Homecoming Court

The Homecoming Court at Albany High consists of two freshmen girls, two sophomore girls, two junior girls, and three senior girls, elected by their representative classes. The Homecoming Queen is the senior girl receiving the most votes from the entire student body.  She and her court represent the school at a football game designated as the homecoming game. The group of girls and their escorts are introduced to the spectators at half time. The queen is announced at this time. This is one of the most exciting events of the football season.

Junior-Senior Prom

Each year in May the juniors present the Junior-Senior Prom. The juniors do all the work. The seniors receive invitations from the junior class. This is a private party for juniors and seniors only. A sophomore may attend at the invitation of a junior or a senior. Admission is by ticket only purchased prior to the prom. The prom is a very formal affair.

Miss AHS Pageant

Something all girls look forward to is the Miss A.H.S Pageant. The Beta Club sponsors the pageant annually during the fall. Each club nominates a junior or senior girl to represent it in the pageant. Miss A.H.S reigns over her school the rest of the year and return the following year to crown the next Miss A.H.S. Proceeds from the pageant are used for scholarships sponsored by the Beta Club.

Mr. AHS Pageant

New to 2007, the Mr. AHS is sponsored by TASCO.  Each club nominates a junior or senior boy to represent it in the pageant. All boys participate in the following competitions:  casual wear, talent, formal wear, and interview.

Pep Rallies

On Friday afternoons before given football games, the student body and teachers assemble in the gym for a pep rally. The cheerleaders lead the students in cheers and chants. The band performs selected numbers, which will include the “Fight Song” and the Alma Mater. Spirit speeches will be given by an array of people (students, teachers, team captains, etc.).
