The Dougherty Comprehensive High School Guidance and Counseling Department offers a host of services to students.  Our goal is to provide an effective and comprehensive program that enhances student development in the following areas:

  • Academic
  • Personal/social
  • Career

Our motto is “Every Child, Every Chance, Every Day!”

The Guidance and Counseling program at Dougherty Comprehensive High School strives to assist students in academic achievement, self-discovery, developing effective decision-making skills, interpersonal skills, healthy coping skills, and career opportunities that prepares them to compete in a global society.
Our program uses the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model.  ASCA has identified four counselor skills that help to articulate the new role of school counselors. They are:

  • Leadership
  • Advocacy
  • Collaboration
  • Systemic Change

ASCA has also identified four other components of an effective 21st Century school counseling delivery system. These are:

  • Guidance Curriculum
  • Individual Student Planning
  • Responsive Services
  • System Support

For more information about the ASCA National Model, visit www.schoolcounselor.org/

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Who is my counselor?

Counselors are divided up by alphabet for student academic planning only.  Counselors move up with students each year until the student graduates.  Counselors are primarily responsible for maintaining their student academic planning caseload by updating, auditing, and evaluating student transcripts, schedules, and providing individual academic counseling.

Note: Students immediate needs (i.e. personal, social, and career) can be addressed by any available counselor.

When can students meet with a counselor?

Students may go to the guidance office primarily during their lunch, breaks, before and after school to see a counselor.  If the counselor is unavailable at that time, students can request an appointment and/or complete the request log posted outside the counselor’s door.  The counselor will see you as soon as possible.

Note: Students immediate needs (i.e. personal, social, and career) can be addressed by any available counselor.

Where do I go for a copy of my records, transcripts, or report card?

Students may go to the record’s clerk and complete a request form along with a $3 fee.  The record’s clerk is located in the guidance office. Copies can be picked-up and/or mailed within 24-48 hours.

If students want to send transcripts to a college  (in-state) on their own, they can go to www.gacollege411.org, click on College Planning, then on Applications and Transcripts, then on Request and Track Your Transcript.

Note: Our record’s clerk must send transcripts to out-of-state colleges.

How can I enroll or withdraw my child?

Parents must go to the record’s clerk and complete an enrollment packet.  To withdraw your child, parents must complete a withdrawal form.  Please call the record’s clerk to find out what you will need to bring before you enroll or withdraw your child.  The record’s clerk is typically available Monday-Friday from 9 am-2: 30 pm. Please call and make arrangements prior to coming.

How can I find scholarships?

Go to gacolleg411.org and look under Financial Aid Planning.  Check with the financial aid office of any colleges you are considering.  Conduct a national search at www.fastweb.com or www.collegeboard.com. Find local scholarships on our website, in the guidance lobby, or see your senior English teacher.

How can students get a fee waiver for the SAT/ACT and a college application fee waiver?
Students who qualify for a free or reduced price lunch are eligible for a fee waiver and college application waiver.  See your counselor to take care of this.

Remember: Not all colleges accept college application waivers.  Students must confirm with the college prior to requesting the college application fee waiver.

How can I schedule a conference with my child’s teacher?

Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled by our Parent Facilitator.  Be sure to join our parent support group and ask about our upcoming parent trainings and workshops.

How can I access my child’s schedule, grades and attendance?

Parents can create an online account through our I-Parent portal to see their child’s schedule, grades, and attendance.  To setup an account or for more information about I-Parent, you can contact our media specialist and/or our parent facilitator.
