Health and Physical Education
Health
and Physical Education at Robert Cross Middle includes not
only the teaching of sport skills but also health
instruction and education.
Instructors are Coach Wooden,
Coach Bentley, and Coach Thornhill.
In
Physical Education we cover the basic skills of many
different individual and team sports, such as track,
softball, volleyball, basketball, and touch football.
We also teach some uncommon
sports such as badminton, bowling, step aerobics, and weight
training. We focus on developing personal fitness, however,
and in the first nine weeks administer a test to determine
students’ fitness level.
We build upon your child’s
fitness knowledge each nine weeks and teach them ways to get
and keep fit. Your child will take two nine-week courses of
Physical Education.
Health
is a separate academic-type course in which your child will
study topics such as nutrition, drug awareness and avoidance
(including alcohol and tobacco), the body systems, and
safety.
All students take one nine-week
course of Health.
We
also offer special days for your child’s enjoyment, such as
Field Day homeroom competitions and class competitions in
various sports.
We also encourage your child to
participate in recreation league sports whenever possible.
We intend to provide your child
with a well-rounded experience in hopes that they make
healthy positive lifestyle choices.
Middle
school marks a transition for your child in physical
education.
For the first time, your child
will dress out for class activities and have their own
locker in the gym.
Class requirements are simple:
a white T-shirt, red or blue shorts that are of acceptable
length, and athletic shoes with socks.
Dressing out, keeping an
information folder, and participation count 60% of the total
class average.
Also for the first time, your
child will take written tests over the rules and terminology
of their class activities, along with a nine weeks test at
the end of each grading period.
We are
happy that you have chosen Robert Cross, and we look forward
to working with your children this year.
