Mandatory Remediation Policy

Quick Links

Any child not obtaining a passing score (300 or above) on the math and/or reading sections of the CRCT in grades 1 through 8 will be provided a Dougherty County School System Remediation Plan and required to receive remediation in that subject area. Remediation will be offered during the summer and the following school year by the Dougherty County School System, to include opportunities such as:

  • before and after school assistance from teachers
  • math or reading connection classes
  • participation in safety nets
  • summer school
  • participation in instruction support programs (EIP, Reading Intervention, Ramp-Up, etc.)

If students choose to attend remediation classes offered by an outside agency, the agency must be a regionally accredited institution, and the classes must fulfill the requirements of the DCSS Remediation Plan. Failure to attend remediation classes and not obtaining a passing score on the CRCT in reading and/or math will result in automatic retention the next school year. Students in grades 3, 5, and 8 must meet state criteria for promotion [see Board Policy IHE].

In addition to CRCT requirements, students must be in compliance with the other components of the DCSS Promotion Policy [see Board Policy IHE]. Students who fail to comply with any required component of the DCSS remediation Plan [see Board Policy IHE~E97)] will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities (athletics, after school practice / performances in band, orchestra or chorus, and club activities).

Any high school student not making a passing score (500 or above) on any section of the Georgia High School Graduation Test will be required to receive remediation until he/she passes the appropriate test(s). Remediation will be offered before and after school, on Saturdays, and during the summer by the DCSS. It will include opportunities such as:

  • tutorials
  • summer school
  • Saturday school
  • participation in REP

Students who fail to comply with any required component of the DCSS Remediation Plan [see Board Policy IHE~E (7)] will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities (athletics, after school practice / performances in band, orchestra or chorus, and club activities).

Any child at the elementary, middle and high school who fails to comply with components of the DCSS Remediation Plan IHE-E(7) dealing with tardies, attendance, class work and homework will not be allowed to participate in extracurricular activities (athletics, after school practice / performances in band, orchestra or chorus, and club activities).
