The Albany Early College initiative is a result of the long-standing partnership between the Dougherty County School System and Albany State University. The AEC opened its doors in 2008 to serve as an extension program to middle schools in the school system. Designed so that students may earn both a high school diploma and up to two years of credit towards a Bachelor' degree, Albany Early College's mission and vision align perfectly with the system's goals of improving graduation rates and preparing students for entry into highly skilled careers. Students at Albany Early College are engaged in a rigorous college preparatory curriculum which allows them to compress the number of years required to complete a college degree. The program focuses on young people for whom the transition into post-secondary education may be problematic. Its priority is to serve low income young people, first generation college students, English language learners, and students of color, all of whom are statistically under represented in higher education, and for whom society has low aspirations for academic achievement.
