REACH Albany is a scholarship partnership between the Georgia Student Finance Commission, the Dougherty County School System and the Albany-Dougherty Business Community that aims to reward hard-working students from middle-class families with significant financial incentives to attend Georgia colleges and universities.
REACH, an integral tenet of the Complete College Georgia Initiative, is a needs-based mentorship and scholarship program designed to encourage students, starting in middle school, to persist in their educational pursuits. Students are provided with the academic, social, and financial support needed to graduate from high school, access college, achieve post-secondary success, and be prepared for the 21st Century workforce.
If selected, 8th grade students are pledged a $10,000 scholarship upon graduation having met certain academic requirements. That amount is doubled if the student enrolls at Albany State University or Darton State College.
The REACH Albany Selection Process:
A lot of time and effort was spent making sure that REACH participants and finalists were selected with fidelity. Principals at the five DCSS middle schools were asked to comb their schools for students who, while maybe weren't among the top academically, showed promise and poise.
Administrators from the DCSS then reviewed the applications to ensure students met the core precepts of the program. Ultimately, a committee comprised of DCSS officials and business leaders from the Albany-Dougherty Community interviewed the finalists and filled the five state-approved slots.
The awardees are then showcased to their peers and community at ceremonies at their respective schools.
The REACH program requires partnerships from the business community in terms of both mentoring and financial support. Below are our partners for the program. If you're interested in partnering with the DCSS for the REACH Albany program, please contact Dot Sadler at 229-431-3334
