ALBANY, Ga. – Several students from the Dougherty County School System (DCSS) top awards at the 2025 Georgia Council for the Social Studies (GCSS) State Social Studies Fair, held on May 3 in Kennesaw, Georgia. Among approximately 180 entries statewide, DCSS was represented by 11 outstanding projects, with three students earning top honors in their respective categories.

Award-Winning Projects:

  • Loralei Tarleton, a senior at Westover High School, received the Ernest Lee Sr. Memorial Social Psychological Special Recognition Award and was named Best in Class IV: Sociology for her project.

  • Makayla Harden, a sophomore at Monroe Comprehensive High School, earned Best in Class III: Sociology

  • Athena Garvey, a sixth-grader at Robert A. Cross Middle Magnet School, was honored with the Georgia Archives History Special Recognition Award for her project.

The GCSS State Social Studies Fair is an annual event that encourages students from grades 5 through 12 to engage in rigorous research and present findings on various social studies topics. The fair aims to promote critical thinking, analytical skills, and a deeper understanding of social sciences among students across Georgia.
