Shanekia Williams

ALBANY — Dr. Shanekia Williams will become the district’s next Director of Curriculum and Instruction following the end of the school year after the Dougherty County Board of Education voted to accept Superintendent Kenneth Dyer’s recommendation Monday evening.

Williams, who currently serves as principal at Merry Acres Middle School, has served as either an educator or administrator since 2009 and has been with the Dougherty County School System since 2014. Prior to serving as principal at Merry Acres Middle School, she served as principal at Live Oak Elementary School. She has previously served as an assistant principal at Radium Springs Elementary School and an instructional coach at Alice Coachman Elementary School.

“I am incredibly grateful to the Dougherty County School System Board of Education and Superintendent for this opportunity. As the new Director of Curriculum and Instruction, I look forward to collaborating with our dedicated teachers and educational leaders to ensure our students receive a rigorous and relevant education. Together, we will continue building a strong foundation for student success and uplifting our community through learning,” Williams said.

Dr. Mary Felton, Chief Academic Officer for the DCSS said Williams’ broad experience is a welcome addition to the Academic Services division.

“I am excited to welcome Dr. Shanekia Williams to our leadership team in the Division of Academic Services as the Director of Curriculum and Instruction,” Felton said. “Dr. Williams brings a broad range of experience and a clear vision that will support our school leaders and teachers in carrying out our strategic goals—to ensure every student receives a rigorous and relevant educational experience that prepares them to succeed in life and make meaningful contributions to their communities.”

Williams will transition into the role following the end of the 2024-2025 school year. The Dougherty County BOE has also named Williams’ successor. Taking over as principal will be former DCSS assistant principal Dr. Calvin Poole, who is returning to the district after serving as principal at Sumter County Middle School.
