On April 17th, our 10th and 11th-grade WHS Academy of Medical Arts (AMA) students took a deep dive into the world of healthcare during an immersive visit to Albany State University’s West Campus. It was a day filled with networking, exploration, and hands-on clinical experience.
The day kicked off with a warm welcome and an energetic "Bingo" icebreaker. This wasn't just a game—it served as a Q&A session connecting our WHS students with ASU Nursing Pin students. Our students gained firsthand insights into the collegiate journey and the incredible opportunities awaiting them at Albany State.
Following the meet-and-greet, students embarked on a guided tour of the West Campus. They explored various Health Science labs, getting a behind-the-scenes look at the high-tech environments where the next generation of medical professionals is trained.
After a delicious lunch with a variety of choices, students enjoyed some downtime and entertainment in the Student Center Game Room, building camaraderie outside the classroom. The highlight of the day took place in the Nursing Simulation Center. Our students moved from theory to practice, gaining hands-on exposure to essential clinical skills, including, IV Insertion (Practicing the precision required for intravenous access), Colostomy Care(Learning the delicate process of changing a colostomy bag) and Nasogastric (NG) Tubes (Understanding the technique for tube placement).
To wrap up the day, students tested their knowledge in a high-energy Medical Kahoot game. This was an invaluable experience for our students, bridging the gap between high school academics and the reality of a career in medicine.
