Westover High School has achieved a remarkable national milestone by collecting 149 total blood donations, including 136 units from African American donors, during the 2025–2026 school year. This accomplishment ranks Westover High School first among all high schools in the United States for African American blood donations.
To qualify for the national scholarship award, schools must rank among the top 10 high schools in the nation for African American blood donations. While earning a place in the top 10 is an outstanding achievement, Westover High School's #1 national ranking is an extraordinary accomplishment worthy of celebration.
This achievement reflects the compassion, leadership, and commitment of Westover students, staff, and community members who worked tirelessly to raise awareness about Sickle Cell Disease and the critical need for a more diverse blood supply. Through education and service, the school empowered students to understand the life-saving impact of blood donation and the importance of giving back to others.
More than 100,000 people in the United States are living with Sickle Cell Disease. Many patients require regular blood transfusions as part of their treatment. However, hospitals are only able to provide the most compatible blood match approximately 40% of the time. The remaining 60% of patients receive the next best match, which can lead to additional health complications.
Research shows that approximately one in three African American blood donors is a compatible match for patients with Sickle Cell Disease. By increasing the number of African American blood donors, communities can help close the health equity gap, improve treatment outcomes, save lives, and give families more precious time with their loved ones.
Westover High School is honored to receive the accompanying scholarship, which will support a deserving student leader as they pursue their educational goals and continue making a positive impact in their community.
